A Little Sneak Peek

I recently had the opportunity to photograph in Bandon, Oregon for a few days. For those unfamiliar with Bandon Beach, it is sort of like landing on another planet. It seems that way to me anyway. It is a surreal landscape peppered with seas-stacks, sand, light, and ocean. It isn’t the first time I have photographed in Bandon, but each time you step into a landscape like this it is a unique and special experience.

I haven’t yet had a chance to process any of the photographs I took, but thought I would give a ‘behind the scenes’ view of what I have been fortunate enough to see through my camera. This was shortly after sunset, during the so-called ‘blue hour’. In fact, not only was the sky blue, but because there were several inches of water on the beach reflecting that blue sky, the entire image appeared blue (this is a cell phone shot of the LCD on my camera, with no adjustments made other than straightening the image). In addition, there were white blobs of foam skating across the surface of the water as the waves rolled in and out, adding to the surreal feel of the whole scene.

I have to admit that this was also the point in time that I found out that my ‘Neos’ boots that seal with a Velcro closure were not truly waterproof in any way, shape, or form. It isn’t the greatest sensation to suddenly feel your socks and new shoes fill with salt water….but I persevered. The things we do for photography :)

More to come…

An addenda to the post: since the time I wrote and scheduled the above post to be published, I have had the chance to process the image from the back of the camera. As it turns out, with the foam moving rapidly across the beach, I had actually taken several versions of the same image with different degrees and locations of foam and slightly different camera positions. The one I chose to process is slightly different than the one on the back of the camera. Truth is, the wind was blowing so hard that many of the images came out less sharp than I would like. This one was sharp.
