Prefontaine

Steve Pefontaine was a world class long distance runner who competed in the 1972 Olympics and, while training for the 1976 Olympics, set US records for every distance from 2,000 to 10,000 meters. He died in a car accident in 1975 at age 24, before he could compete in the 1976 Olympic games.

Prefontaine was born in the small town of Coos Bay, Oregon, where I have been doing part time work for the last year. Needless to say, he is a ‘local celebrity’ and there is a small park in the center of town that has several murals of him. I took a walk a few weeks ago while there and couldn’t help but make a few photos.
