Loving The Fog

I do enjoy photographing fog. I love the mood it creates, though it can sometimes be difficult to portray it well. If it’s really thick it can just appear as a haze over everything, and if it’s minimal it doesn’t do a whole lot. But if it’s just right then it can really add a wonderful mood to a photo.

To get proper exposure you typically have to overexpose from what the camera’s metering tells you in order to make it appear lighter than middle gray. Of course, things are a lot easier in the digital age in terms of making things look as they should. Still, it is always better to get it ‘right’ in camera and guided by the histogram (we do have it much easier than in yesteryear :)

Now that the mornings are getting quite a bit cooler there is likely to be more fog to photograph. I, for one, am looking forward to it!.
