Stove Room V - The Carrie Furnace

When the Carrie Furnace was producing iron, the noise in the Stove Room was deafening and the workers had to communicate using hand signals.  This is described in the audio segment accompanying this photograph of one of the stoves.

When these stoves were in use they made an incredible amount of noise as they heated air to high temperatures.

Stove Room V

Despite the fact that when I photographed at the Carrie Furnace it was abandoned and quiet in an almost ghostly sort of way, when it was a functioning mill the noise in the Stove Room was deafening. This is described in the audio segment, where you will hear about how it was so loud that anyone entering had to use hand signals to communicate.
