When The Carrie Furnace was shut down, the workers were not told that they were being laid off.  

In this audio clip you can hear about what happened to the workers.  In addition, Mr. Gault notes that most of the homes in the Homestead, Pennsylvania area actually burned coke gas for heat, as opposed to natural gas.
