Under Route 80

Under Route 80

I love making photographs that contain patterns. When I saw the shapes of these trestles repeating themselves under a Route 80 bridge in Ohio's Cuyahoga National Park, I knew it was time to stop and take a picture.

Purity

My "Odds 'N Ends" Portfolio contains several images of gargoyles. I have specifically made photos of gargoyles that seem to convey certain emotions and have used that emotion as the title of each picture. These photographs were taken in color, converted to black and white, and have then had a heavy sepia tone applied, as I feel that this type of toning really brings out the emotion in the photographs.

Fluidity

This black and white version of the color image in the Intimate Landscapes Portfolio won a silver medal by B&W Magazine in their Single Image 2010 issue.

Purple Haze

Purple Haze

What is it?  It doesn't really matter, does it?  After all, the image is about lines, shapes, and movement. It isn't really about the true nature of the subject. However, since most people want to know....it is a stand of trees.   The photograph was made by moving the camera up and down during a long exposure.

Images like these are 'hit and miss', meaning you have to make a good number of them to find one that 'works'.  For me, this one did!

Three Bottles

Three Bottles

I was walking with my camera, unencumbered by my tripod, which is something that I don't do very often. It is said that when your mind is open and receptive the images come to you rather than the other way around.

I was really just trying to be aware of my surroundings when I saw this beautifully backlit restaurant window with three wine bottles on the inside sill. I was captivated by the light and the forms. I am actually still suprised that I saw it since it was well above the level of my head. I am glad I looked up!

Morning Fog

Morning Fog

On an early morning trip to Lake Arthur, about an hour from my home, I was treated to a beautiful scene of fog rising through the trees at sunrise. One of the advantages of photographing near home is that you can return many times and experience the location throughout many different seasons and conditions.

Grain Elevator II

Grain Elevator II

The simple geometric shapes are what attracted me to this almost abstract image of two grain elevators. In the back of my mind, I am thinking about doing a series of these types of images based on 'Geometry' if I can find enough subjects that work well.

528 Trees

528 Trees

No, not 528 trees, but trees at the Rt. 528 Boat Ramp.  The early morning sunlight was falling directly on this grouping of trees, making them glow. The color photo was nice, but this was meant for black and white!

Dancing Trees

Dancing Trees

I was drawn to the abstract appearance of the trunk and branches of this tree, which were accentuated by converting to black and white and giving the image a high key appearance. The small tree at the bottom right echoed the main subject and competed the composition.

Dancing Trees II

Dancing Trees II

These trees looked to me like they were dancing during a foggy morning in Moraine State Park.

Glowing Tree

Glowing Tree

I couldn't help but make a photograph of this tree in Ohio's Hocking Hills State Park. It was backlit and the leaves looked like they were glowing from within. The trick was to find just the right angle to isolate it from the other trees around it so that the image would not appear cluttered. It took some maneuvering but I finally found the angle that 'looked just right' to me.

Stone Hands

Stone Hands

Hands can be extraordinarily expressive. Even ones made of stone.

Tree And Birds

Tree And Birds

An exploration of life and light. Interpretations will vary. At least I hope they will.

Ancient Tree

Ancient Tree

To me, this tree conveyed a feeling of ancient knowledge and wisdom, as well as a spiritual connection to nature. The digital additions I made to this photograph transformed it into a piece that I hope conveys this idea. It is a tree that has witnessed quite a bit in its lifetime.
